Walk to School Day - October 8th, 2014

We are just 2 weeks away from International Walk to School Day! For many parents, the car has become the main means of transporting children to and from school. The result has been a gradual decrease in the numbers of children walking and wheeling to and from school on a regular basis.

International Walk to School Day promotes: increasing daily physical activity, improving safety, enhancing the environment, reducing levels of crime, developing community cohesion, promoting social interaction and reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools.

Join us on Wednesday, October 8th (Rain date: 15th). We are hoping to have groups leaving from 5 locations again this year. If you are available to volunteer at one of the following, or if you want to form a group of your own, please let us know: Stockman Drive, Upton Park, Soccer Field Entrance by Park West, Parricus Mead Subdivision, and West Royalty Community Centre.

Groups usually meet at around 7:45 am and walk to school together. We have volunteers at some of the starting locations but more are always welcome! If you can help or want more information, contact westroyaltyhs@gmail.com.

H&S Update - September 11, 2014

Magazine Campaign
Attention Parents! It has come to our attention that two access codes were sent home - one correct and one missing a number. The number on the envelopes are incorrect, the flyer is correct!.  The correct Access Code has seven digits - 3730223. If you forget or have already sold magazines with the incorrect access code, do not worry! This will be corrected on Magazine Count Night! Have a good day and happy selling, shopping...and soon reading!

Leadership Training for Home and School Volunteers
Rather than holding centralized training workshops for local Home and School volunteers this year, the PEI Home & School Federation has decided to offer individualized training and support as needed. So, if you would like to have training or a refresher session please contact the Executive at westroyaltyhs@gmail.com. If we get enough interest, we will arrange for a session for West Royalty volunteers.

English Language School Board Strategic Plan
In August, the English Language School Board released its Strategic Plan for Student Achievement 2013-2017. The long-term mission is to improve post-graduation options of graduates by enhancing their academic profiles. This document covers the first of two strategic planning periods to achieve this goal. Welcome Back!

We hope everyone had a fantastic, fun-filled summer vacation! It's hard to believe it is already September!

We want to take this opportunity to welcome you back to another school year. We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new principal, Marilyn MacLean, and to all students and families that are new to our school community.

The Home and School Executive for 2014-15 is:

President - Janice Murphy
Vice-President Cathy Nabuurs
Treasurer Colleen Henderson
Secretary Shawna MacDonald-Wong

We are looking forward to working with all of you. Check us out online at http://www.westroyaltyhs.ca. Please feel free to contact us with any thoughts or concerns as the school year progresses. Our monthly meetings are held in the teacher’s lounge at West Royalty School on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 pm. Mark your calendar for our first meeting on October 14th. All are welcome!

On Tuesday, September 9th at 6:30 pm, we will be holding our annual Meet the Staff Night. It is a great opportunity for families to meet the staff of West Royalty School and the Home and School Executive, visit your child’s classroom and check out all the volunteer opportunities available at our school.

We are currently looking for volunteers to fill some of our roles as committee chairs - a full list of committees is available on our website under Contact Us. If you are interested in chairing a committee, just let us know.

Our major fundraising event, the Magazine Campaign, runs from September 10th - 24th. This is an event that involves our entire school community. Students will be selling magazine subscriptions and winning great prizes. Funds from the Magazine Campaign go towards many of the events at our school  - to get an idea of all the things we do, check out last year's Year in Review.

We will do our best to keep you informed throughout the school year. Please subscribe to our updates (on the home page) so you do not miss out!

All the best for a great school year!
Your Home and School Executive
