Inaugural International STOP CYBERBULLYING Youth Summit - November 9, 2013

On November 9, 2013 in Charlottetown, PEI, for the first time in the world, hundreds of youth leaders and innovators will be joined by leading experts in cyberbullying, criminal justice, health and cyberwellness, education and industry and youth empowerment to address the troubling problem of cyberbullying.

The summit's MC will be Parry Aftab, founder of StopCyberbullying.org and keynote speaker at Nova Scotia's recent SpeakUp! Conference. Presenters include:
  • Jacqueline Beauchere, Chief Internet Safety Officer, Microsoft Corporation
  • Kim Sanchez, Director Online Safety, Microsoft Corporation
  • Barbara Coloroso, author of The Bully, the Bullied and the Bystander
  • Sharon Rosenfeldt, Co-Founder, Canada's Victims of Violence
  • Victoria Grand, Head of Global Communications & Policy, Google/YouTube
  • Sue O'Sullivan, Canada's Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime
  • Dave Steer, Manager of Policy & Communications, Facebook
  • Glen Canning and Leah Parsons, Rehtaeh Parsons' parents
  • Representatives of various provincial government ministries and the RCMP

But the real stars of this event are the students, age 10 -18. Four hundred student participants will be interacting with 200 adult experts and parents in person, with 3000 additional students and experts joining by digital feeds. Working using the UN Expert-Styled format, through four stakeholder tracks (Criminal Justice and Victimization, Education and Industry Best Practices, Health and Cyberwellness and Youth Leadership and Empowerment), young people will lead the discussions to help create an action plan to combat the problem of cyberbullying and improve digital hygiene and literacy. Students from around the world will participate via video conferencing and social media. Students from Atlantic Canada, New York, British Columbia and Ontario will be represented at the event itself.

Through videotaping booths, students and adult participants will share their cyberbullying experiences and suggestions. And to prepare for the summit, students across PEI will be trained by Dr. Parry Aftab, founder of StopCyberbullying.org, and surveys, studies and student contributions will be commissioned. A "call for papers and ideas" is being announced where student artists, performers, musicians, poets and innovators can submit their work for consideration by the StopCyberbullying Leadership Council for inclusion at the summit, in social media and on StopCyberbullying.org.

The Inaugural Stop Cyberbullying Youth Summit is not the last step - it is the first step to a cyber-neighborhood all stakeholder solution to protect and empower our youth. The event is being sponsored by Google, Microsoft, Digital Living Labs Foundation and WiredTrust's Socially Safe Seal.

Ken Dryden Speaks Out on Concussions - October 16th

Hockey Hall of Famer and five-time Vezina Trophy winner Ken Dryden will be facilitating a symposium on concussions on October 16th at Rodd Royalty in Charlottetown, from 6:30 – 9:00 pm. There is no charge to attend the event.

The symposium is being hosted by CHANCES Family Centre, in partnership with Hockey PEI and the support of local sponsors. Mr. Dryden has facilitated similar symposiums focused on concussions in several communities across Canada.

CBC’s Matt Rainnie will emcee the event, which will explore the many aspects of concussion injuries, including the experiences of athletes and families of those affected, medical experts who treat the injuries, and administrators who are able to effect change. The focus will not just be on the problem, but a search for potential answers and solutions to reduce potential concussion risks in sport.

Panel participants will include:
  • Ryan McKenna, an athlete who suffered a concussion
  • Dr. William Stanish and Dr. Neil McLure, sports medicine experts
  • Todd Jackson, Hockey Canada
  • Forbie MacPherson, UPEI Panthers
