January 27th Update - Enjoy Family Literacy Day!

Today is Family Literacy Day, an annual celebration of adults and children learning together. All parents are encouraged to spend some family time today on an activity that builds literacy or numeracy skills. Have some FUN with a card game or board game tonight! For more information, visit: http://abclifeliteracy.ca/en/family-literacy-day.

Speaking of literacy, we are excited about the upcoming literacy event for the parents of children in Kindergarten to Grade Two. On February 22nd from 6:30-7:30 pm, literacy coach Jackie Hicken will be discussing "How to support your child as a reader". Parents will also get a chance to spend time with their child’s grade level teachers to discuss specific reading outcomes. No babysitter? No problem! We plan to have a movie playing in the multi-purpose room, with supervision to allow as many parents as possible to attend. A registration form will be sent home with students on Monday, January 31st. Please be sure to register for this literacy event. This session is presented in partnership with the PEI Home and School Federation through the Parent Engagement Initiative.  Watch for a session for parents of children in Grades 3-6 on April 12th from 6:30-7:30 pm.

Winter Carnival has been scheduled for Saturday, March 12th from 10-12. Stay tuned for more details of this fun family event.

Mark your calendars for Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week from February 14th to18th. If you are interested in volunteering to help, please contact Heather MacKenzie, who is organizing this important event in appreciation of all the great staff at our school.

Cheers,
DB

Public Libraries to Launch New Early Literacy Program

According to a news release from the Department of Tourism and Culture, families with young children will soon have access to new early literacy programs at their local public libraries, including:
  • starting in January, free Preschool Story Time programs offered weekly at 25 branch libraries across the province. Each week, children aged three to five, along with a parent or caregiver, can visit their library for a 30-minute interactive program, which will include stories, rhymes, music, finger plays, and felt board activities.
  • online multimedia storybooks called Tumblebooks accessible on the PEI Public Library website. These interactive books contain illustrations and stories from hundreds of published books. Children can read the stories aloud by themselves, read along with the narrator, or listen to stories while learning to recognize words and sounds. The Tumblebooks collection also includes games, puzzles, and books for school-aged children.
  • access to Early Literacy Computer Stations at several library branches. These computers are equipped with games that feature popular children’s characters and help children with literacy and numeracy.
