Thank You and Happy Holidays!!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers who have given tirelessly of their time and talents during the school year. West Royalty Home and School Association's Response to the Education Governance Commission

The West Royalty Home and School Executive plans to address the Prince Edward Island Education Governance Commission.  A discussion paper has been developed - click here to view. The two main purposes for this discussion paper are: 1) to provide background information about education governance in Prince Edward Island and education trends in other jurisdictions and 2) to seek input on a series of questions that will define the framework of the education system in PEI (who should do what and how should things be done?).

We would like to submit our ideas as a collective group, representing the opinion of the entire school community.  If you have anything to add to these discussion questions, please contact Wendy Miller or Denise Bulger with your comments and/or willingness to join our committee.

The deadline for submissions is in December, so we would like to get on this as soon as possible.

Thank You,

Wendy Miller, President
Denise Bulger, Past President

New Kindergarten / Grade 1 Playground

On behalf of the West Royalty Home & School Association we would like to extend a sincere THANK YOU to all parents, students, and local businesses that supported our fundraising initiative last year to purchase new playground equipment for our Kindergarten and Grade 1 children.

We are extremely pleased to announce that the new playground equipment has been purchased, and the City of Charlottetown will be installing it next week!

To help us celebrate the grand opening of this new space, we are inviting all the donors who made a donation to join us at the new playground on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 1:50 pm to take an official picture with all the children in Kindergarten and Grade 1.  You will be receiving a special invitation through the mail early next week.

Once again, thank you to everyone who supported our initiative. We look forward to meeting you in the coming week!

Thank You Mr. Aitken!

On June 27th, the students and staff at West Royalty Elementary School said their final goodbye to Mr. Aitken who has been the Day Custodian since the school opened in 2000. To the students, Mr. Aitken has been more than a custodian. He has taken a genuine interest in each of the children, caring about their well-being. He always had time for a smile and a chat and he had a soft heart for the children that were going through tough times. The hallways of our school will seem empty without him next fall...

Thank you Mr. Aitken for being such a special part of our school community!

Enjoy your summer!

Well, this is IT!  The last day of school! Our girls jumped out of bed today with the same gusto as they did on the first day of school. It’s a toss up as to whether they are more excited about the fun day ahead of them today, or the many weeks of summer stretched out in front of them.

It really has been a great year! I cannot say enough thank yous to all of the incredibly dedicated parents within our school community. Without you, many of our initiatives and events throughout the year would not have been possible!  Whether it was a call for volunteers, cookies, or fudge, you did not disappoint!

Personally, it was a great experience to be involved with the Home and School this year. The executive group was fabulous and enthusiastic; thank you Janice, Wendy, and Krystal!  We were very fortunate to work with Mr. Gaudet and Mrs. Cameron. They get top marks for their support of Home and School initiatives. The depth of consideration they show toward the students at WRE is outstanding! They have created a wonderful environment at West Royalty.

I ran into Mr. Aitken at the school this morning... as busy as ever!  On behalf of the executive, we wish him a relaxing and enjoyable retirement.

Enjoy your summer. If you see Mother Nature around, remind her that it is officially summer now!  I’m optimistic that the sun will come out again... someday.

Cheers,
DB

HELP our playground grow!

Attention Businesses and Residents of the City of Charlottetown

The parents of West Royalty School, through the Home and School Association, are currently raising funds to support the purchase of additional playground equipment for the Kindergarten and Grade 1 play area.  Last year, West Royalty Elementary was very fortunate to have an addition built to accommodate the Kindergarten children. However, the children in grades K and 1 are sharing equipment originally intended for a smaller group. Currently 60% of the children at the school are under the age of 8.

The West Royalty Elementary Home and School Association is a vibrant group of involved parents who are committed to enhancing the school environment for all children and families of West Royalty Elementary. Over the years, we have contributed significant funds to the purchase of playground equipment for the changing needs of the school. In addition to the amount of funds currently put forth by the Home and School toward additional equipment for the K&1 area, we have a goal of raising $15,000.

The playground at West Royalty Elementary is well used by community members outside of school hours, and, while our focus is to support the needs of the school, we believe in providing a welcoming environment for the community as well. We hope that, in the spirit of partnership, you will consider making a donation to help us achieve our goal. Donors will be recognized on a donor sign to be located near the new play structure.

The amount of sign space allocated to donors will correspond to the category of their donation.
Platinum: $700 and above
Gold: $500 - 699
Silver: $300 - 499
Bronze: $100 - 299
Friendly acknowledgements: $50- $100

Every dollar helps!

To make a donation and have your name on the sign, please complete the form below and send it to the attention of Krystal Mayne no later than June 23, 2011.

June 1st Update

How did it get to be June already? It seems like only yesterday that the school year started! It’s an exciting time of the year for the children. The countdown has definitely begun! I am really looking forward to the Spring Concerts tonight and tomorrow. While you’re there, be sure to get some fudge or tickets on a Cavendish Beach Music Festival Family Pass in support of adding equipment to the K-1 playground area.

A huge THANK YOU to the families that showed their support of our clean up last Saturday! We made some great progress over a short period of time. We were able to really clean out of the beds at the front entrance of the school. The kids had fun digging and planting, and did a great job of picking up any garbage that was around the property.

A yearbook is in the works and will be available for purchase toward the end of the school year. A pre-order form was sent home this week with a deadline of June 8. Depending on the number of yearbooks pre-ordered, it is expected that the cost will be between $8 and $10 per yearbook.

The final Home and School Meeting of the school year will be held on June 14th at 6:30 pm in the staff room. All parents are welcome to attend as we discuss many important issues for the children of West Royalty. We will be nominating the executive position of Treasurer for the 2011-2012 school year.

Cheers,
DB

Fudge Sale - Your HELP is needed!

Dear Parents,

The Home and School Association will be holding a fudge sale during the two-day Spring Concert series next week to raise money to support the purchase of new play equipment for the Kindergarten and Grade 1 students.

At West Royalty we were very fortunate to have a beautiful new wing added to our school; however, we currently do not have the necessary play equipment to support these new students.  Your HELP is needed!

We are asking parents to help us raise money by donating a pan of fudge to sell on June 1st and 2nd at the Spring Concerts.   Donations should be dropped off at the school no later than 2 pm on May 31st.

Any donation or purchase is much appreciated!   On behalf of the staff and students of West Royalty School, thank you for your support.

May 16th Update

They say that April showers bring May flowers - I dunno what they say about May showers, except maybe to build an ark!

Our next Home and School Meeting will be held on June 14th at 6:30 in the staff room. We will be nominating the executive position of Treasurer for the 2011-2012 school year. If you would like to nominate someone, a form will be sent home soon with the children, and is available here.

The Giving Tree Award is an award presented to a parent who is leaving the school this year. We ask that you consider nominating a parent who has contributed to the school over their years of being a parent of children here. Their name will be displayed on a red apple and added to the display in the lobby of the school. Further details and nomination form is available here.

We have scheduled a family school grounds clean up for Saturday May 28th from 10-12. Please come out and support this Home and School initiative. Bring your shovels and rakes! We will be focusing on the front beds of the school, and will need some muscle power. We also hope to  pick up any litter around the grounds.  If you have any hearty perennials or bulbs to contribute toward beautifying the front beds of the school, please drop them off by 10AM on May 28, or send them to school with your child on Friday May 27. The rain date for this event is June 4th.

It’s unbelievable that we’re now announcing dates into June! Where did the time go? There are a lot of fun activities planned for the children to participate in during June - the Spring concert, field trips, and the Fun Day to mention a few. Stay tuned for details!

Cheers,
DB

April 15th Update

THE ROBINS ARE HERE! I wonder if they realize how happy we are to see them at this time of the year! I know it’s been Spring on the calendar for almost a month, but it seems real once the robins arrive! However, the snowsuits and boots will linger around for a few more weeks... just in case!

It is National Volunteer Appreciation Week, so I’d like to take a moment to say THANK YOU to the many volunteers who support Home and School initiatives throughout the year. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience, and we do appreciate the help that many of our parents provide to ensure the success of our events and support of the school community. If you want to help, but are not sure about the commitments involved, please get in touch with us and we can give you an idea.

The next opportunity to roll up your sleeves is coming soon! For those of you with a green thumb, we are planning a Spring Clean-Up at the school for families to come out and help tidy up, spruce up the beds, trim the trees, and give the grounds some TLC. The tentative date is May 28 in the morning.

The Literacy Event for parents of children in grades 3-6 will be held on April 19th. If you have not received a registration form, please contact the school ASAP. As with the event for the early grades, there will be a movie playing for any children who attend.

The PEI Home and School Federation Annual General Meeting will be held this Saturday morning in Charlottetown. If you would like to attend, please contact a member of the executive ASAP.

A yearbook is in the works and will be available for purchase toward the end of the school year. If you have taken any photos at school events that you would like to share for possible inclusion, please send them to westroyaltyhs@gmail.com for review.

Our next Home and School Meeting will be held on May 10th at 6:30 in the staff room. All parents are welcome to attend as we discuss many important issues for the children of West Royalty. A few important discussion items from the recent meeting include:

  • There is an executive position available for the coming school year, and we will be going through the nomination process soon.
  • For the upcoming school year, there will be a parent involved in the schools Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
  • An ad hoc committee is being formed to plan and oversee the development of the K-1 playground into the future. If you are interested in participating, contact Krystal Mayne.

If any of these interest you, please let us know.

Cheers,
DB

Bus 190 Update

Please be aware that it is the second bus run for bus #190 that has had some changes to allow the children to arrive at the school on time. If your children were affected by this change, a letter was sent home on Tuesday April 5th.  The affected neighborhoods are: Sandlewood St., Donald Dr., Parricus Mead, and Upton Road. I apologize for the confusion that this has caused for some parents.

April 6th Update

I saw two geese yesterday wandering aimlessly over West Royalty. Not robins, but I’ll take it!

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing March Break. Can you believe we are down to the last few months of the school year? Where has all the time gone?

I wanted to share some success that the executive of the West Royalty Home and School has recently achieved. Bus 190 has been arriving late at the school all year. For those of you with children on this bus run, you know what I am talking about. The children are missing socialization, announcements, and settling in time at the start of their day. We recently wrote a letter to the ESD expressing our concerns with the situation. As of tomorrow, the situation will be resolved. The children will travel on a different bus that will see them arrive with plenty of time to get organized and start their day off in a better way.

Our next Home and School Meeting will be held on April 12th at 6:30 pm in the staff room. All parents are welcome to attend as we discuss many important issues for the children of West Royalty. We will be discussing available executive positions for the coming school year.  If you are interested in being involved, we’d love to hear from you.

The Literacy event for parents of children in grades 3-6 will be held on April 19th. If you have not received a registration form, please contact the school ASAP.

March Break Update

I hope that March Break is off to a GREAT start for everyone, and that you are enjoying the brighter evenings! I am really looking forward to saying "Hello Spring"!

The Winter Carnival was a success - Mother Nature tried to dampen the event, but lots of fun was had indoors. I believe that the children love to visit the school for events other than school! Thank you to Vanda Deighan who has chaired this event for some time now, and Krystal Mayne who assisted her this year. The teachers contribute so much to this event for the children - THANK YOU!!

The Literacy Event for the parents of children in grades 3-6 has been rescheduled to Tuesday April 19th at 6:30 pm. Details and registration forms will be circulated after March Break.

The next Home and School Meeting will be held on April 12th at 6:30 pm in the staff room. All parents are encouraged to attend to hear about many items that affect our school.

The PEI Home and School Federation Annual General Meeting will be held the morning of April 16th at the Rodd Charlottetown. If you are interested in attending, please contact a member of the executive.

Please don’t forget to take a few minutes to participate in the Tell Them From Me online survey before the end of the month. This survey will provide valuable feedback about our school from parent’s perspective.

For those of you with a green thumb, we are planning a Spring Clean Up at the school for families to come out and help tidy up, spruce up the beds, trim the trees, and give the grounds some TLC. Stay tuned for details.

Enjoy the March Break!

Cheers,
DB

Provincial school inspections underway

Inspections of schools across the province have begun and all schools will be completed this spring, according to Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie.

The School Inspection Committee, made up of representatives from all three school boards, as well as the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, and the Provincial School Safety Consultant determined a school inspection priority list based on a number of factors. Those factors include:

• The age of the building
• The architecture and construction of the building
• Maintenance history
• Any complaints that have been received from staff or students

For more information from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development on these inspections, click here for the news release.

March 11th Update

As anticipated, there will still be lots of snow for the winter carnival tomorrow; however, it sounds like Mother Nature will keep everyone indoors. Is it spring yet?? The winter carnival is a great time for the kids to have some fun at the school, and a nice time for parents to catch up as well. Make sure you drop into the multi-purpose room for some hot chocolate!

The request to participate in the Tell Them From Me survey was sent home last week. This survey includes teacher, staff, and parent participation. You may have noticed the media coverage of the survey lately. The provincial government has partnered with The Learning Bar Inc. to create and deliver the survey and results. Please take some time before the end of this month to share your thoughts. If your survey notice did not make it home, contact the school and they will provide the required information.

A yearbook is in the works and will be available for purchase toward the end of the school year. If you have taken any photos at school events that you would like to share for possible inclusion, please send them to westroyaltyhs@gmail.com for review.

Cheers,
DB

Literacy Night a BIG Success!

Mother Nature cooperated and Literacy Night went ahead as scheduled last night, and it was a huge success! There were many favorable comments from the more than 40 parents in attendance.

The night consisted of an introduction by Ken Gaudet and our Home and School President, Denise Bulger.  While the children watched a movie and snacked in the multi-purpose room, the parents attended four separate educator-facilitated sessions to learn specific information related to supporting their children as they learn to read.  There was some time at the end of the evening for parents to relax and ask specific questions of the teachers on hand. All parents were provided with some valuable information to support their children's reading, and ten lucky parents went home with a copy of the book The Wednesday Surprise,  which was used during one of the sessions. For those of you who weren't able to atttend, you can find a copy of the parent guide at: http://www.peireads.com/.

We are all looking forward to our next Literacy Night for the parents of children in grades 3-6 on April 12th.

See you at the next Home and School meeting on Tuesday, March 8th at 6:30 in the staff room.

Your Home and School Executive

PS: There is a scholastic book fair at the school next week. Anyone wishing to help out with this event, please contact Mrs. MacKinnon in the school library.

Literacy Night for the parents of children in grades K-2 will be held on Tuesday February 22nd from 6:30-7:30 pm. The children in attendance will be enjoying a movie and snack in the multi-purpose room. Encourage them to come in their PJs, and then they’ll be almost ready for bed when they get home!

The results of the Primary Math Assessments were sent home with Grade 4 students on February 14th.  At the February Home and School meeting, Mr. Gaudet mentioned that the students at WRE did quite well overall. For more information about the assessments, visit the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development website at www.gov.pe.ca/eecd/ProvincialAssessment.

All proceeds of the Carnival support the French program at the school, so come on out and play some Wii, or if BINGO is more your speed, you can do that too!

Public Libraries to Launch New Early Literacy Program

According to a news release from the Department of Tourism and Culture, families with young children will soon have access to new early literacy programs at their local public libraries, including:
  • starting in January, free Preschool Story Time programs offered weekly at 25 branch libraries across the province. Each week, children aged three to five, along with a parent or caregiver, can visit their library for a 30-minute interactive program, which will include stories, rhymes, music, finger plays, and felt board activities.
  • online multimedia storybooks called Tumblebooks accessible on the PEI Public Library website. These interactive books contain illustrations and stories from hundreds of published books. Children can read the stories aloud by themselves, read along with the narrator, or listen to stories while learning to recognize words and sounds. The Tumblebooks collection also includes games, puzzles, and books for school-aged children.
  • access to Early Literacy Computer Stations at several library branches. These computers are equipped with games that feature popular children’s characters and help children with literacy and numeracy.
