December 1st Update

Welcome to December! I always find it to be a unique month - it has the ability to sneak up on us like no other month can! As we all start to scramble around in a mad dash to prepare for the Holiday Season, I want to draw your attention to the discussion to be held during the next H&S meeting to be held on December 14th from 6:30-7:30 in the staff lounge at the school. All parents are encouraged to attend this meeting as we will be discussing the disbursement of funds raised through the magazine campaign.

Please give generously to our Christmas Family initiative. If you have any questions, Laura Connolly is leading this important initiative this year.

I recently had the opportunity to attend a brainstorming session for Island-wide H&S Presidents. Owen Parkhouse, President, PEI Home and School Federation facilitated the event. The top three issues facing H&S Associations, as decided upon by those attending, were the importance of engaging more parents, the need to further define fundraising so that local associations are not raising money for what should be core educational expenses, and the need for government to establish a sustainable infrastructure plan for schools Island-wide. The provincial group will be focusing some efforts on these important issues in the coming months and I expect to see some resolutions put forth at the Annual General Meeting in the spring.

The H&S Executive has recently received notification that our request for funding to participate in the Parent Engagement Initiative through the PEI Home and School Federation has been approved. We will be hosting two sessions early in the New Year focused on Supporting your Child with the Writing Process. The literacy coach, and teachers, will be involved in creating informative sessions for parents to assist us with understanding what the academic expectations of the writing curriculum are for our children so that we may better support them. Dates will be published as they become available. More information on this province wide initiative can be found here: http://www.edu.pe.ca/peihsf/PEOF%20List%20of%20Projects.html

Cheers,
Denise Bulger, President
