September 29th Update

What a WONDERFUL morning for Walking School Bus!  It was great to see so many enthusiastic children and parents walking to the school this morning. Thanks to Wendy Miller for organizing this successful event! Did you know that if just 9 families participate regularly in a Walking School Bus over the course of a school year, they can collectively prevent almost 1000 kg of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere? International Walk to School Month is OCTOBER...more information can be found at: http://www.iwalktoschool.org/. We’d love to hear from parents about the possibility of having groups of students walk to school together on a more regular basis. There are schools in Canada that have completely eliminated their school busses… WOW!
All magazine orders should be at the school TODAY.  This is our major annual fundraising event, and we value your efforts to support the school.
Today is Raise-a-Reader Day! Twenty-seven newspapers across the country, including The Guardian, support the campaign. Since its inception in 2002, this campaign has raised more than $15 million dollars.  All funds raised remain in the local community. Please support this valuable campaign!
The Healthy Snack Program kicks off next week. This program ensures that every child receives a healthy snack monthly.  As the committee is dedicated to supporting local farmers, the first snack will see the children chomping on our amazing harvest of apples!
The Halloween Dance is scheduled for October 29th. Cheryl Jabbour is heading up this FUN family event. Stay tuned for details as they become available.
Please mark your calendar for our first Home and School Meeting on October 12 at 6:30 in the staff lounge at the school. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Cheers,

Walking School Bus - Volunteers Still Needed

On Wednesday, September 29th (Raindate: Thursday, September 30) we will be holding our Annual Walking School Bus.  We have 4 locations this year: The West Royalty Soccer Field, The West Royalty Community Centre, Upton Park Mailboxes and The Corner of Sandlewood Drive and Raspberry Lane.

The 2 West Royalty groups will depart at 7:30 am.  The Upton Park group will leave at 7:45 am and the Sandlewood Drive group will leave around 7:50 am.

If anyone would like to volunteer to help with the Walking School Bus, please let us know as soon as possible.  We still need a few volunteers for the West Royalty Soccer Field.

Thank You,

September 22nd Update

Fall Greetings to all! Can you believe we’re heading toward the end of September? Where has the time gone? It was great to see so many parents at Meet the Teacher night last week. Thank you to all who volunteered to help with our many activities throughout the year. We can’t do it without you!

We will soon be providing all volunteer names to the appropriate committee chairs for them to work with in the coming months. We are still looking for someone to chair the Christmas Family and Winter Carnival committees – if you are interested in chairing or co-chairing one of these important initiatives for the school, or have questions about the required commitment, please do not hesitate to contact one of the H&S executive.

The annual Walking School Bus will hit the sidewalks on September 29th (rain date is September 30th). Parent volunteers will be walking with children from Park Meadows (bus stop), Upton Park (mail boxes), West Royalty Community Center, and the Winsloe Soccer Field. This is an excellent opportunity for the kids to get some fresh air and extra exercise to start their day off right.

We hope to see you at our first Home and School Meeting of the year, October 12th at 6:30 pm in the staff room at the school. All parents are welcome to attend.

Magazine Campaign

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!

We are entering the final days of the magazine campaign. Please ensure all magazine orders are submitted to your child’s homeroom teacher on or before September 29. On behalf of the Teachers, Staff and the Home and School Executive, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to each student and their family for their support. This is the only fundraising event we run all year and we truly appreciate your efforts and dedication!

Please keep in mind that our school receives 35 cents of each dollar raised, so every magazine subscription counts.

Volunteer Opportunities

We’re approaching the end of week one now, and I hope that everyone is settling into a good school routine. The children are certainly excited and full of energy to get the year off to a great start!

The first few opportunities for involvement at the school have arrived already! Our major fundraising event - the magazine campaign - runs from September 15-29th. Krystal Mayne is looking for volunteers to assist in the coming days, as well as at the conclusion. Also, we will be getting the food order process underway next week and have some wonderful volunteers who tirelessly work their magic. If you have time to assist bi-weekly, please contact Pam Tierney for further details.

A special welcome to all parents of the Kindergarten children who joined our fabulous school today! The Home and School Executive was on hand Tuesday evening for the Kindergarten event, and there was a definite air of excitement! We understand that it is a big transition for many of you for your little one to be in the school environment, and we hope that you will become actively involved in the West Royalty School activities that occur throughout the year.

Enjoy the weekend, and we’ll see you at Meet The Teacher Night on Tuesday, September 14th at 7:00 pm.

Cheers,
Denise Bulger, President

Welcome Back!

Welcome BACK TO SCHOOL! And welcome to the new online home of the West Royalty Home & School Association! We hope this site will be a frequent stop for all parents to stay in touch with what is going on at our school.

Your child is the most important reason to get involved in Home and School activities. Research shows that parental involvement is directly connected with a child’s success at school. We are fortunate that our children attend a wonderful school, and want to work with you to ensure they have a positive experience at West Royalty Elementary.

We hold monthly meetings that are open to all parents and are an excellent way to stay informed about what’s happening at the school. We also host many activities throughout the school year, and often call on parents to assist in making these events successful. We believe that every parent has a talent to share, and a few hours to give. Together, we can create an amazing community for the families of West Royalty Elementary! Click on Coming Events or Contact Us to find out more on how you can help.

Cheers,
Denise Bulger, President
